As Hartford approaches the 400th anniversary of
its original settlement, the City has entered an
exciting new chapter in the history of its built
environment. Hartford is one of the most
historic cities in New England, and in recent
years the City has rallied around its historic
buildings, embracing historic preservation as a
tool for strengthening neighborhood character
and fostering economic revitalization.
The Planning Division has taken a leading role
in originating and supporting preservation
efforts in the City. The Division
currently supports or administers the following
preservation activities and
programs:
•
The City of Hartford Preservation Ordinance
• The Historic Preservation Commission and
Historic Properties Commission
•
Section
106 Review
Historic Preservation
Ordinance
In May of 2005, the City Council adopted a
groundbreaking new law that protects every
property designated on the State or National
Register of Historic Places from unauthorized
demolition or alteration. The
Ordinance
went into effect in December 2006, 30 days after
the City's Historic Preservation Guidelines were
adopted by City Council. The Ordinance
states that
all work requiring a building permit
being performed on properties that are
individually listed or within a historic
district must gain the approval of Historic
Preservation Commission before they may receive
their permit. Affected Building Permit
applicants must fill out an Application for
Historic Review in the Department of Licenses
& Inspections.
In November of 2006, the City Council adopted a
set of
Historic
Preservation Guidelines
advising property owners, developers,
contractors, and architects on what types of
work are recommended for Hartford's historic
buildings. The Planning Division offers
technical assistance for Hartford property
owners who wish to use these Guidelines as a
means of protecting the historic character of
their buildings. Please contact the
Planning Division at (860-757-9055)
for more information.
