The goal of the Public Health Program is to develop and maintain Hartford as a healthy community by developing a sound public health infrastructure, promoting healthy life styles, controlling and preventing diseases and by enforcing the public health code.

The Public Health Education program addresses the health and wellness of Hartford residents by providing services that educate and inform them on various health-related issues.

This program  provides and coordinates health education initiatives in the Hartford community. These initiatives include presentations and programs offered to community organizations, schools, day care centers, shelters, parent’s groups,   senior centers, seminars for qualified food operators and food handlers. The program utilizes the government access channel and radio stations to further its outreach efforts.

The program maintains strong partnerships with community based and service providing organizations to maximize its efforts to reach the largest number of residents.

Examples of current ongoing health education programs:

Dancing to Wellness/Salud con Ritmo- Meets every first Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at different locations to allow Hartford residents from different neighborhoods to take part in this healthy initiative.

Whether it is ballet or ballroom, jazz or tap dance, dance is great for helping people of all ages and physical abilities get and stay in shape. An adult of medium build can burn about 150 calories doing 30 minutes of moderate social dancing.

Healthy Hartford TV– Airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 PM on Hartford Channel 21, City TV. Rita Kornblum is the host and she explores topics about health and the environment “ because we believe that it is your right to know”.

Healthy Hartford Website This  website was developed to  provide information on a broad range of environmental topics that affect the quality of life in the City of Hartford. The goal of this website is to offer a health education opportunity for Hartford residents and to encourage community participation in urban environmental public policy. The site covers the following environmental issues that are of      concern to Hartford residents: lead poisoning, asthma, indoor air quality, outdoor air quality, open space, Brownfields and environmental justice. The website address is www.healthyhartford.org

Hartford Asthma Speaker’s Bureau -  This program trains Hartford community members to educate other Hartford residents on how to identify signs and symptoms of asthma and obtain referrals sources for those who require medical assistance.

Urban Health Initiative: Through a collaborative partnership with the University of Connecticut this program focuses on assuring accurate need analysis, data sharing, development of joint health education projects, research and service programs.
