NEWS RELEASE HARTFORD POLICE MAKE
ARREST IN 2003 VALERIE BROWN HOMICIDE. (Hartford) - Garland Porter of 64 Jackson Road, Bloomfield, Connecticut, has been arrested by Hartford Police and charged with the March 2003 murder of Valerie Brown of Hartford. On April 29th, 2003, Valerie Brown, who was reported missing on March 17th, 2003, was found dead in Keney Park. The Chief Medical Examiner's Office determined her death to be a homicide. Porter fathered a child with Brown. The two year homicide investigation was conducted by Hartford and Bloomfield police departments. An arrest warrant charging Porter with murder and criminal use of a firearm was issued for Porter on June 30th, 2005. Hartford Police Major Crimes Division Detective Mark Fowler and Bloomfield Police Detective Eric Kovanda, the lead investigators in the case, arrested Porter without incident at his home in Bloomfield on Thursday evening. HPD Major Crimes Supervisor Sergeant David Polletta said "the hard work and tenacious effort of Detectives Fowler and Kovanda has ultimately paid off with the arrest of Porter and justice for Valerie Brown." Porter remains in police custody on $1 million bond.
