K-9 Units
The Hartford Police Department
currently has four Officers partnered with trained canines in the Patrol
Division. A fifth Officer and canine partner are in training at the State Police
Academy and will be assigned to the field this Spring.
Though the canines need no prior training before acceptance into the program,
the handlers look for particular personality traits and excellent health.
The Connecticut State Police
Canine training is fourteen weeks and trains the animals in obedience, tracking
both people or their belongings, building searches
and criminal apprehension. The primary responsibility of the canine/officer team
is response to active calls for service including alarms, robberies, purse
snatches and armed suspects.
