DATE April 2005
TO:    Hartford Commercial Property Owners
SUBJECT: Cleanliness of Commercial Properties

I am seeking your assistance in keeping Hartford clean and looking good.  As regional capital, Hartford attracts visitors from around the country who judge Hartford’s culture by the appearance and cleanliness of our roadways, properties and sidewalks.

Litter, overgrown weeds, and trash around properties, both commercial and residential, create a negative first and lasting impression.  Illegal dumping in some areas of the city greatly deters the city’s overall appearance.

I am therefore seeking your help to make Hartford more presentable – the city’s Public Works Department cannot do it all. Please help us by:

  •  Cleaning up litter around your establishments to include sidewalk areas and road gutters.
  •  Keeping your property reasonably maintained and free of tall grass and weeds.  If you own vacant property, please maintain it.
  •  Draining trash of any excess liquids bagged and tied prior to disposing in trash dumpsters or trash carts.  Keep lids and doors closed and do not leave trash and garbage outside of dumpsters or receptacles which allows rats and other animals to have access to it.
  •  Recycling all the mandated items.  Recycling is mandatory in Hartford.  You must separate recyclables from the trash (in order to reduce your total trash volume), and set-up an active recycling collection program at your establishment.  Separation of recyclables shall be done in accordance with State law.
  • Providing a receptacle for customers at your establishment to deposit trash rather than depositing      it on city streets.  Encourage its use.

Reporting any illegal dumping that you observe to the Hartford Police Dispatch at (860) 527-6300.

Your cooperation with this request will help ensure Hartford maintains its heritage as a regional center and continues to attract visitors both locally and nationally.
