TO:  Hartford Residents
SUBJECT: Reminder of the Rules on Proper Presentation of Trash, Recyclables and Bulky

This letter is to remind you of the proper way to put trash, recyclables, and bulky waste out for curbside collection.

Keeping Hartford clean and looking good takes a lot of effort and cooperation by its residents and the Department of Public Works.   In order to eliminate rodent infestation, maintain clean neighborhoods, and establish a high standard for quality of life in our city, we are providing the following summary on the trash rules and asking for your compliance:

  •          Separate trash, recyclables, bulky waste and scrap metal and place at curbside on your assigned trash collection day.
 • Drain trash and garbage of any excess liquid, place in garbage bags & tie prior to placing in city issued trash container. All tied trash bags must be placed inside the cart and the lid must be closed.  No extra bags of trash  may be placed at the curb for collection.
 • Recycle and place only the recyclable items in the blue bin for collection.  Recyclable items are newspapers, corrugated cardboard, magazines & catalogs, glass food and drink container, plastic food & laundry containers    (PETE #1 & HDPE #2 only), drink boxes & milk/juice cartons, and aluminum and metal food or drink containers.  Cardboard boxes must be flattened and tied with string. And all containers must be emptied & cleaned prior to placing in the recycling bin.
 • Place only city issued trash container at the curb, along with your recycling bin and bulky waste items (such as branches, must be in four foot lengths or less and tied, box springs, mattresses, Upholstered furniture & appliances, take door off refrigerator).

The city has an aggressive trash enforcement program.  Violators of the above policy initially receive warning letters.  Continued violations result in a municipal citation and fine.  It is not my desire to levy fines.  My purpose in providing you with this notice is to avoid this by requesting your cooperation.

I am also seeking your help in keeping our neighborhoods clean by asking you to always clean up litter around your residence to include sidewalk and road gutters, keep your property reasonably maintained and free of tall grass and weeds.  If you own vacant property, please maintain it.  In addition, report any illegal dumping that you observe to the Hartford Police Department.

Let’s take pride in our city and together, we will continue to make Hartford a great place to live, work and play.
