“GRANDPARENTS RAISING KIN GRADUATE”
Saturday, June 24, 2006

"Making the Most of the Second Time Around,'” a seven week, 13 session course for empowering Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Butterworth Hall at the Hartford Campus of the University of Hartford. (The former Hartford College for Women).

The Hartford Grandparents Program, Hartford Commission on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, the New England Cognitive Center, and the University of Hartford sponsor the course. Participants will receive certificates from the University of Hartford.

Communicating with children, talking about sex and drugs, dealing with grief and loss, and legal issues are the main topics studied with a powerful speaker for each topic. In addition, participants are learning critical and creative thinking and problem solving skills to use both with the children under their care and in their own live. The course ends with practicing advocacy tactics and making plans to reach others with the knowledge they have acquired.

Mayor Eddie A. Perez applauds the strength and commitment of Grandparents who raise their children’s children.  The Mayor says, “Our children need family and strong roots.  Our children need dedicated adults who will believe in them.  This program gives grandparents the tools they need to help youngsters overcome obstacles and succeed in life.”

Ramon Rojano, Director of the Health and Human Services Department says, “Grandparents raising their grandchildren today is no easy task.  The world is changing ever so quickly but these grandparents have chosen to commit to a seven week course and learn new skills that will not only enhance their parenting but make them better advocates for themselves and their families.”

Louise Loomis, Founding Director of the New England Cognitive Center, and Assistant Professor of Critical Thinking at the University of Hartford and instructs the seven week course says, “ I am so thankful to NCAAA and the City of Hartford for funding this program. Grandparents are learning so much, you can see the changes in them in just a few weeks.”
