SETTLEMENTS
DEPARTMENT BUDGET:
The 2000-2001 Adopted Budget is $4,021,390. This reflects a decrease of $2,400,000 or 37.4% under the 1999-2000 Adopted Budget.
Budgeted in this account is $3,196,390 for tax
appeal refunds, grant settlements, or labor arbitration awards. The cost of
satisfying negligence suits and miscellaneous claims against the City are also
budgeted in this account in the amount of $825,000, which includes $325,000 for
the City’s contribution to settlement with Education Alternatives, Inc. (EAI.)
The majority of these suits are for defective sidewalks, curbs and highways. The
Corporation Counsel’s office represents the City in any claims brought against
it and may, with the approval of City Council, compromise and settle any such
claims. Other claims are settled through a court judgment.
