CORPORATION COUNSEL
MISSION STATEMENT:
To provide quality legal assistance and advice to City departments, and
Elected and Appointed Officials.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Court of Common Council appoints the Corporation Counsel on a biennial basis. As legal advisor, the Corporation Counsel protects the rights of the City in all actions, suits, or proceedings, and furnishes written opinions on any question of law involving the respective powers and duties of all City officials. Additionally, with the approval of the Court of Common Council, the Corporation Counsel has the right to compromise and settle all claims against the City, and also prepares or approves all forms of contracts or other instruments to which the City is a party. Corporation Counsel provides legal services to all City officers, agencies, boards, commissions and employees. Corporation Counsel is also responsible for administration of the Settlements Accounts which funds tax and other liability settlements.
DEPARTMENT BUDGET:
The 2000-2001 Adopted Budget is $1,510,840. This reflects a decrease of $74,110 or 4.7% under the 1999-2000 Adopted Budget.
BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS:
The decrease is a result of a reduction in the Special Counsel Account and a postponement in filling a vacant Assistant Corporation Counsel position until the third quarter of the fiscal year. Reductions were also made in misc. supply and contractual accounts. Additional funding was added for independent investigator services to strengthen the Police Civilian Review Board. The major focus for the Corporation Counsel will continue to be to defend all actions brought against the City and it’s agents. In addition, the City attorneys will assist the City administration in the collection of delinquent taxes and the disposition of abandoned buildings.
