Starting as a grassroots effort of Asylum Hill and West End citizens, the Farmington Avenue Streetscape Project is a 1-mile corridor enhancement initiative with the goal to restore the street’s "granduer and’ make it a ‘more economically vibrant place."  It extends through Hartford’s Asylum Hill and West End neighborhoods, from Prospect Street at the West Hartford town line to Marshal Street.  The initial vision began in 1996 by the Farmington Avenue Joint Committee, now the Farmington Avenue Alliance.

Farmington Avenue is more than an urban arterial street.  It is one of the primary western gateways into Hartford.  The Avenue is a mixed-use corridor or residences and businesses.  Traversing national historic districts and connecting many national register buildings, it is the primary arrival point for visitors to the National Historic Landmark – The Mark Twain House and Museum

Project Status

The first phase, from Marshall Street to the vicinity of Sherman Street, was completed in the Spring 2016.  In the Summer of 2016 the City received an Urban Act Grant in the amount of $1.5 million grant to help complete the streetscape to its western limit as Prospect Street.

With these funds, the City will secure the services of a consulting engineer to complete the design and prepare construction documents to Prospect Street.  Actual construction is pending and dependent upon the available of funds as the completion of the streetscape is estimated at approximately $6 million.

Schedule

Design is anticipated to commence in the Summer of 2017.
