Spruce Street Construction

Spruce Street Improvement project, which is part of the Hartford Intermodal Triangle project, will start the week of October 27, 2014.  This project involves the creation of a more pedestrian friendly access to Hartford’s Union Station and includes constructing a bump-out in front of the main entrance to the station to allow passengers to safely cross the street, pedestrian cross walks and cross walk ramps.  In addition, a bus stop concrete pad will be constructed on the north end of the street and a curb cut to allow transit buses access to Church Street.

Construction is expected to take three weeks.  Access to the Spruce Street Parking lot will be maintained throughout the construction period.  There will be a safety officer from the Hartford Police Department assigned to the construction activities along Spruce Street to allow for the safe crossing of individuals from the parking lot to Union Station.

The driveway access to the intercity buses will not be disturbed by this construction.  This construction affects the loading and unloading zones for taxis and cars on Spruce Street.  During the construction period there will be no access to the taxi loading zone, therefore the loading and unloading zone for taxis will be permanently relocated to Allyn Street on the Union Place side of Union Station.  Allyn Street will be converted to a two-way street between Union and High on Tuesday, October 28th.  Taxis will be queuing on the north side of Allyn Street by Wednesday, October 29th.

The District will be posting signs throughout the transportation center (platform area, canopy area, lower level waiting area as well as the Great Hall waiting area) to direct intercity and Amtrak passengers to the new taxi zone.

We apologize for any inconvenience this construction may cause you and your visitors.  The improvements planned for the station and the area surrounding the station will be of notable benefit to all the passengers and individuals that frequent Union Station.
