The Hartford Fire Department’s Most Valuable Asset is its Personnel The continued success of the Hartford Fire Department is dependant on motivated personnel with leadership and managerial skills necessary to lead the department into the 21st century. The professional development of fire department personnel of all ranks requires a level of education necessary to meet the challenges of the complex technology and operations associated with modern fire suppression and protection. The Hartford Fire Department has established a pathway for firefighters to obtain their formal education thereby enhancing the department and its most important component, its members. Through comprehensive coordination, eligible students now have an outlet by which to plan and coordinate the successful completion of their degrees, in order to have a positive impact on future leadership roles and promotional opportunities. According to the National Fire Academy, independent study and Distance Learning have appealed to working adults nationally in growing numbers for the past few years, however, Distance Learning is particularly attractive to fire service personnel whose fire departments' shift work normally makes classroom attendance difficult. Distance Learning provides an alternative means for fire service personnel to earn an Associate, Bachelor's, or Master’s degree or to pursue college-level learning in a fire-related course concentration without the requirement of having to attend on-campus classes.
