Food Policy
Councils
What
is a Food Policy Council?
A Food Policy
Council is a collaborative group consisting of those involved in
agriculture, food production and distribution, nutrition, health and
social services. Members might include farmers, produce wholesalers,
government representatives, food banks, school food service
representatives, public health agencies, social service agencies and
programs, and concerned citizens. A council's members are charged with
examining the local food system and recommending ways in which it can be
improved. By involving a wide range of people from food-related fields
and with a wide variety of perspectives, a Food Policy Council seeks
creative solutions that will improve a community's food access and
security on a larger, systemic level. Councils are often created as
advisory bodies that work directly with the city, local or state
government. As such, they are often staffed and administered through
government agencies or food policy related non-profit groups.
