Welcome to the
City of Hartford
Advisory Commission on Food Policy
On this
webpage, you will find information about the history and membership of
the Commission, our recent research, publications and events, and the
issues that affect food access in the city of Hartford.
The Commission, in structure, scope and
goals, is among a growing nation-wide trend of "food policy councils"
created to advocate for system-wide solutions to food access and
agricultural problems. These councils are organized on municipal,
regional and statewide levels, and bring together those who work
directly in the agricultural, food, health, or social service sectors,
among others. By involving individuals from a wide range of
food-related groups, organizations and businesses, a food policy council
aims to take a collaborative approach to improving the food access and
nutrition awareness of area citizens.
As Hartford's "food advocate," the
Commission works to insure that all Hartford residents have access to
fresh, affordable and nutritious food. The Commission is an advisory
body to the city government, and is charged with researching the
availability and quality of food in the city and monitoring the city's
food distribution programs. We are here to improve the food security of
Hartford's communities, and welcome your input about our work. Please
feel free to contact us at any time with your questions, comments or
suggestions!
The Commission is staffed by the Hartford
Food System, a Hartford-based non-profit working to create an equitable
and sustainable food system that addresses the underlying causes of
hunger and poor nutrition.
