The Hartford Bureau of Vital Records is located at The Hartford Municipal Building on 550 Main Street, ground floor, Room 103, Hartford, CT  06103. Business hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.,  Monday - Friday. We can be reached at 860-757-9690.

The Hartford Bureau of Vital Records have on file births, civil unions, deaths and marriage certificates for events that occurred only in the City of Hartford from 1852 to the present. If the event did not occur in Hartford please contact the town of occurrence for a copy of your record.

Certificate and License Information

BIRTH CERTIFICATES  

A Hartford birth certificate may be obtained through the following means:

  • In person, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 550 Main Street,  Room 103 (first floor)
  • Through a mailed-in written request.
  • Through web orders processed  at  www.vitalchek.com.

In accordance with State of Connecticut Statutes, birth certificates are legally available to:

  • The person him/herself eighteen years of age or older (full sized copy or wallet sized)
  • The person him/herself sixteen or seventeen years of age (wallet sized ONLY)
  • A parent, spouse, grandparent or child of said person
  • A  legal representative or legal guardian with appropriate proof of legal status

Birth records of 100 years or older are public information and do not require identification. 

Copies of birth certificates are available in a wallet size $15.00 for each copy or full-size for a fee of $20.00 for each copy. (NOTE: passports require the full size) There are protective plastic covers available for the wallet size for an additional 50 cents and full size for an additional $2.00.  For further details, call the information line at (860) 757-9690. Birth Certificate Application Process

To facilitate providing the necessary information, you may download a copy of the Application for Birth Certificate form. To get the application for a birth certificate(English), click here. To get the application for a birth certificate(Spanish), click here.  To be able to access this form, your computer must have Acrobat Reader.  Most computers have Acrobat Reader, and it will usually activate itself automatically.  If your computer does not have Acrobat Reader, you can download a copy of it by going to the Adobe website.

The various methods of requesting Birth Certificates are:

In-Person Requests

You may obtain a birth certificate immediately in person. You will be required to fill out a short application and produce valid identification as outlined above. Purchases may be made with cash or money order payable to the City of Hartford. Copies are $15 each for wallet size and $20 each for full-size.

Mailed-In Requests

Please make sure you have included the items and information indicated in the above chart. Make the money order payable to the City of Hartford. Copies are $15 each for wallet size and $20 each for full-size. Please allow 4-6 weeks to receive the certificate(s). (Please Don't Send Cash) Our mailing address is:

Acceptable forms of identification must include valid driver's license, or two of the following one which must be a photo ID:

  1. Social Security Card
  2. Employment ID
  3. State or City ID
  4. If you do not have any of the ID’s listed above, please send copies of at least two recent bills which show your name and current address.

You may place an order for a birth certificate through VitalChek 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, our office will process your order only during regular business hours.  Please note that most express carriers will not deliver to a PO box. You may inquire as to the shipping and handling fees for regular, international, or Saturday deliveries by calling VitalChek.

CIVIL UNION LICENSE

You need a civil union license if you are going to enter into a civil union.  A civil union license must be obtained from the CT city/town of residence or from the city/town in which the ceremony is to occur.  If you are already are in a civil union and are looking for a certificate to prove it, please click here.

The couple must appear in person with drivers license or non-drivers photo ID, and social security card (or if non-resident a passport) in our office to apply for the civil union license. If you are here by 4:00 p.m. you may obtain the civil union license the same day. The license is valid for 65 days. The fee is $30.00.

The legal age for civil union in Connecticut is 18. If you are under the age of 18 must have parental consent. Proper identification is required.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES 

A marriage certificate proves that you have been married to a certain person on a certain date.  If you are going to be getting married, you need a marriage license, not a marriage certificate.   To see information about marriage licenses, click here.
