Veronica Airey-Wilson is currently serving her tenth year as an elected official on the Hartford Court of Common Council. She is the first Jamaican to serve as Deputy Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. Her duties include chairing the Housing Committee and serving as a member of the Finance and Revenue Committee and the Management and Budget Committee. Ms. Airey-Wilson’s leadership has resulted in increased training programs for residents; creation of new job opportunities; funding for first time homeowners; increased small businesses; creation of senior centers; and improvement in the quality of life for the Hartford community. She has been instrumental in developing immigration and citizenship workshops for the Greater Hartford community. She assured funding for numerous community organizations, especially those dealing with youth issues. In 2003, she served as co-chair of the Homeownership Task Force and co-chair of the Youth Workforce Development Taskforce. In addition, she has provided the necessary resources for organizational training in the areas of Certified Nursing Assistant and construction of a new facility for the program.
Councilwoman
Airey-Wilson serves as an executive member of the Capital Region Council of
Government Joint Policy Board and serves on the Hartford Consortium Policy
Steering Committee. She served as the Chair of the Republican State
Convention in July 2002. She is Vice President of the Association of
Caribbean American Leaders and member of the NAACP. She serves on the
Hartford Public Library Capitol Campaign Committee; the Capitol Region Black
Family Enrichment Advisory Board; the Greater Hartford Literacy Council; and
the Connecticut Policy and Economic Council Advisory Committee to the City
Scan Project. She is co-chair of the Camile Fisher Memorial Scholarship
Fund that distributes annual scholarships to area high school students
Ms. Airey-Wilson is a member of the Rose of
Sharon, Chapter #1 of the Independent United Order of Mechanics, W.H. and an
American Leadership Forum Fellow. She is listed in “Who’s Who in
American Women.” She is the mother of two children and a member of Saint
Monica’s Episcopal Church.
