Susan McMullen
has worked for Mayor Eddie A. Perez since January 2004.
She was named Chief of Staff by Mayor Eddie A. Perez in October 2009.
Prior to serving in that role she was Deputy Chief Operating Officer
and Director of Constituent Services. Before moving to Hartford, Susan
served as Capital Projects Administrator and Chief of Staff to the Mayor of
New Britain CT, and as Director of Communications for the Secretary of the
State. Prior to joining public service, Susan ran a family business
for over 10 years, Advance Communications, Inc.
She began her political career in 1993 when a family friend, Bill
Curry ran for Governor, whom she served as Deputy Campaign Manager. She was
also a delegate to two Democratic National Conventions, and managed the
successful campaigns of Jerry Brown for President – CT Primary in 1992,
Pawlak for Mayor 1995-1999, and Perez for Mayor 2001.
In 2002 she served as State Coordinated Campaign Manager for
Gore-Lieberman. Susan is a
graduate of Trinity College, did post-graduate work at the UCONN School of
Law and earned a Certificate in Mediation from the University of
Connecticut. She believes that “government works best when it listens”
and, in addition to responding to constituent requests and interacting with
community groups, has overseen the creation of 311 services to give Hartford
residents one number to call for non-emergency municipal services or
information. Susan also chairs the Mayor’s Technology Steering
Committee, which looks at ways to improve business practices and customer
