Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative

In 1994, 28.3% of all live resident births (or 727 births) were to teenagers, representing the highest rate of teen births in Hartford in the last 20 years. Although rates have slightly decreased over the years, Hartford's rates for Teen pregnancy remain higher than the state average.

Hartford Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, is a 5-year grant funded initiative awarded to the City of Hartford Health and Human Services Department in 2010. Funding is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The overall goal of the Hartford Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program is to reduce rates of pregnancies and births in the City of Hartford by 10% by 2015. The strategies and activities of the grant focus on:

  • Develop a sustainable, citywide community collaborative to focus on Teen Pregnancy Prevention.
  • Increase youth access to health services.
  • Increase capacity of community-based organizations to provide sexual health information to teens.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to ensure the utilization of best practice strategies and curricula.

The initiative includes the following components:

  • Provide evidence based programs to qualified community based organizations through mini-grants and to selected Hartford Public schools (high schools and middle schools).
  • Conduct a community mobilization effort to engage stakeholders.
  • Act in a facilitative leadership capacity to leverage existing resources to increase the coordination of and access to evidence-based contraceptive and reproductive health care for adolescents from the target community.
  • Evaluation of all components mentioned above.
