Triclosan Consumer Fact Sheets

Local Health Departments:

CT DPH has assessed the risks and benefits of the common antimicrobrial ingredient triclosan. It is present in many consumer products including soaps, shampoos, lotions, crèmes, deodorants, mouthwash, toothpaste, sports equipment and cutting boards. Thus triclosan exposure is widespread and affects all age groups with children potentially having the greatest exposure and risk. Triclosan is an endocrine disruptor and appears to increase airway reactivity to allergens. The antimicrobial benefits of triclosan have not been established and its necessity has been questioned. While several manufacturers of personal care products have committed to eliminate triclosan it is still in many products and will be for some time to come.

The CT DPH Consumer Fact Sheet and supporting Technical Fact Sheet let the public know why and how to avoid triclosan exposures around the home and point out the importance of keeping triclosan-containing toothpaste away from young children. Refer to the attached fact sheets for more information.

Please let CT DPH know if you have any questions regarding this consumer product ingredient.
