Big Belly Solar Compactor Program

What is a Big Belly Solar Compactor?
Big Belly Solar Compactors are smart trash and recycling cans that provide improved waste management capacity and trash collection efficiency. Big Belly provide an intelligent waste & recycling collection system Big Belly Solar Compactors improve waste management capacity by 50% over traditional trash receptacles, retain trash, prevent overflowing, keep rodents out. Designed to keep pests out and litter in, Big Belly’s are outfitted with a wireless monitoring system so municipalities can be notified when it’s time for pickup.

The Big Belly uses 100% solar power to automatically compact trash at the point of disposal, dramatically increasing capacity by 5x within the same footprint as ordinary receptacles. Increased capacity means fewer collection trips, cutting related fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.

The Big Belly Solar Compactor program is a pilot program that was initiated with the goal of improving the City of Hartford’s trash receptacle resources by providing and creating an intelligent waste & recycling collection system.

LSNI placed 76 Big Belly Solar Compactors strategically throughout the City of Hartford on November 17, 2012 (40) and November 12, 2013 (36).
