MAYOR PEREZ REMEMBERS

KEITH L. CARR SR., “A QUIET GIANT”

 

---COMMUNITY STATEMENT---

 

(January 11, 2008)--- Mayor Eddie A. Perez joins residents, neighborhood leaders, and members of the West Indian community as Hartford mourns the loss of Keith L. Carr Sr. Mr. Carr died on Monday after a battle with prostate cancer.  He was 77.

 

Mayor Perez says, “He was a quiet giant, but when he spoke, people followed.  This is a big loss for the community, the city, and the region.  Keith Carr connected people through culture, education, and mentorship.  He listened to people and he inspired people.  He will be sorely missed.”

 

Mayor Perez first met Mr. Carr 30 years ago when the Mayor was a community organizer in Hartford’s North End. 

 

Mayor Perez says Mr. Carr “was entrenched, engaged and in touch with people” and he wanted others to appreciate and applaud the contributions of the West Indian community.

 

The Carr Family, in conjunction with West Indian Foundation, has established the Keith L. Carr Sr. Scholarship Endowment Fund that will carry on his legacy of empowering young minds and connecting communities.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14th at 12:00 Noon at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1154 Blue Hills Avenue in Bloomfield.  Calling hours will start at 10:00 a.m.  The family will receive friends for calling hours on Sunday, January 13th from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Henry Fuqua Funeral Home, 94 Granby Street in Bloomfield.
