Eddie A. Perez
Mayor
---NEWS RELEASE---
(January 18, 2007)--- Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez congratulates State Representatives Kelvin Roldan (D-4th District), Kenneth Green (D-1st District), and Doug McCrory (D-7th District) for introducing bold, new legislation to reform property taxes for all Connecticut families.
Mayor Perez says, “Their leadership will help provide relief to residents not only in Hartford, but throughout the state, who pay the second highest per capita cost in property taxes in the nation. I believe this proposal will help significantly reform the property tax issue in the state.”
The bill calls for a $1500 credit on the personal property taxes paid on homes and personal cars that would not exceed 75% of the total income tax owed. For residents of communities where less than half of the residents own their home, the credit would increase to $3500. (Again, not to exceed 75% of the total income tax owed). Cities such as Waterbury, Bridgeport, New Haven, New London, New Britain, Windham, and Hartford fall into this category.
Mayor Perez strongly believes that we cannot burden the people of this state who can least afford to pay their hard earned money in property taxes. Mayor Perez looks forward to working with members of the legislature to assure a fair, equitable and long-term property tax solution.
Proposed bill No. 5963 has now been referred to the Committee on Finance, Revenue, and Bonding.
