MAYOR PEREZ CALLS D.C. TRIP
VERY PRODUCTIVE FOR HARTFORD
---NEWS RELEASE---
(January 25, 2007)--- Mayor Eddie Perez describes his trip this week to Washington D.C. as “very productive” and says Hartford residents can count on getting support from Connecticut’s Congressional Delegation on key issues that are important to the City.
On Tuesday, Mayor Perez attended the “Mayor’s Against Illegal Guns National Summit.” Mayors from across the country pledged to fight for the elimination of the TIAHRT Amendments that prevent the ATF from sharing certain gun trace information on illegal gun sales with local law enforcement.
Mayor Perez says, “The brave men and women who serve and protect the residents of Hartford shouldn’t be denied access to important information that could help prevent crimes and save lives. By working together with state and federal law enforcement officials, our Neighborhood Policing Plan can be even more effective. Last year alone, our officers retrieved 500 illegal guns. The bigger goal is to keep these illegal guns from getting to Connecticut’s towns and cities in the first place.”
On Wednesday and Thursday, Mayor Perez once again took part in the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He also met with our local leaders in the House and Senate.
Mayor Perez says, “Members of the delegation expressed their support for funding for the new Public Safety Complex, improving the Flood Control System along the Connecticut River, increasing Hartford’s homeownership rate, and a local planning grant for transportation that would increase access to jobs and decrease congestion on our roadways. This continued support of the Capital City will only make our entire region stronger and through this strength, Hartford will be even more competitive in the global economy when it comes to jobs and an even more attractive place to live, work, play, and raise a family.”
