HARTFORD “PUTTIN’ ON THE GREEN”
TODAY IS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
--NEWS RELEASE---
(June 5. 2007)---Mayor Eddie A. Perez believes it is important for Hartford to lead the way in being more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. That is why several major initiatives are underway that puts New England’s Rising Star in the forefront of conservation. Mayor Perez says, “The City of Hartford is dedicated to energy independence.”
The City’s school construction and renovation project includes retrofitting existing buildings with energy efficient lighting, windows, and roofs. Municipal and school buildings are also installing systems to better regulate heating, cooling, and lighting.
New buildings being designed and constructed are to be “Green” buildings, including the new Public Safety Complex, which will break ground this summer. Fuel Cell technology will provide heating, cooling, and power to the building on High Street that will be the new central home for police, fire, and emergency management.
The City of Hartford is also leading the way when it comes to committing to clean energy by utilizing wind, solar, and hydro sources. The Capital City will offset 20% of its power needs from renewable energy sources. Hartford is a proud member of the SmartPower 20% by 2010 Clean Energy Campaign and the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Programs. In fact, Hartford has achieved this goal three years ahead of the 2010 target date.
Clean or hybrid motor vehicles are also being purchased for departments as they are being replaced.
The Clean Energy Fund, CL&P Energy programs and various other grants aid in funding this on going plan.
