HARTFORD SEEN AS VITAL TO NORTHEAST REGION

---NEWS RELEASE---

(June 8, 2007)--- Talk about a Rising Star!  The City of Hartford is viewed as a vital economic and educational hub in New England and the Northeast Corridor.  A recently released special report called “Reconnecting Massachusetts Gateway Cities:  Lessons Learned and an Agenda for Renewal” hailed Hartford for having “one of the most productive workforces” and a region that is “a significant corridor for competitiveness.”  That study was referenced in today’s (Friday) Springfield edition of “The Republican.”

The report takes a look at cities outside the Greater Boston Region and recommends developing strong economic ties with growing cities like Hartford.  Cities were chosen based on criteria including financial services, higher education, health care, and information technology.

Mayor Eddie A. Perez says, “This is yet another vote of confidence in Hartford’s future.  2100 new units of housing, 1350 new homeowners, 5,000 high-paying insurance jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods, and a school construction and renovation project that is an investment in education, jobs, and diversity--- this is what makes a city grow and this is what captures the attention of the nation.  I’m proud of all the work that neighborhoods, businesses, and city government has done together to garner this kind of positive growth, opportunity, and attention.”

Mayor Perez looks forward to establishing more regional ties, especially through transportation.  For years, the Mayor has supported the effort to increase rail service to better link Hartford and New Haven to cities like Springfield.  Mayor Perez also supports better utilizing Bradley International Airport for trade and travel purposes that would establish Hartford as a transportation hub.

Mayor Perez believes that a strong Hartford is a strong region.  He says, “The City and the MetroHartford Alliance are now implementing Hartford 2010.  This is the framework to supplement projects already in place that will strengthen and continue to connect our neighborhoods to the suburbs and beyond by attracting additional private investment to make the region more competitive in the global economy while providing a great place to live, work, and play for residents and visitors alike.”
