Mayor Eddie A. Perez believes the “Read and Rise” children’s literacy program is an outstanding companion event to Hartford’s efforts to improve our students’ reading levels.  “Read to Rise” is part of the "Campaign for African American Achievement."  The program is sponsored by the National Urban League and Scholastic Inc., and supported locally by the Travelers Foundation and The Comcast Foundation.

Mayor Perez says, “Partnerships are important.  Working together is important.  By inspiring teachers, engaging parents, and coordinating with communities, together we will raise our expectations and academic standards.  Our mandatory summer school program was extremely successful because it focused on our kids and helping them to excel at reading.  Together, we will help make our youngsters stronger readers and more successful leaders.”
