CHAMPBOAT RACES HIGHLIGHT MAYOR’S SCHEDULE

---NEWS ADVISORY---

---SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD---

10:00 a.m.--- Mayor Perez will welcome people of faith who want to volunteer their time to be more engaged in the lives of Hartford youth.  This recruitment fair is the culmination of the Mayor’s summer long church tour and will take place at Quirk Middle School, 85 Edwards Street in Hartford’s Clay Arsenal neighborhood.  Individuals will have more than 20 organizations to choose from.  The goal is to connect the skills of the volunteers with the needs of the organizations, all to help youngsters feel more connected to their community.

Mayor Perez understands because of Rosh Hashanah and Ramadan, not everyone will be able to attend this event.  However, the Volunteers of Faith tour will resume later this year and another recruitment fair will be scheduled in the coming months in order to continue the positive momentum that is in place and to continue to build what he calls “an army of people of faith.”

12:30 p.m.--- Mayor Perez will welcome law enforcement and firefighter teams from across the country taking part in the National Law Enforcement and Firefighters Basketball Tournament.  Proceeds will help provide scholarships to college students in Connecticut who are pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice.  More than 300 people are expected to participate.  The event takes place at Bulkeley High School, 300 Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford’s Barry Square neighborhood.

9:00 p.m.---Mayor Perez will present a proclamation and the Key to the City to Tito Nieves, an internationally known salsa singer.  Nieves worked with top artists before going solo and setting himself apart by singing salsa in English.  The event takes place at the Carioca club, 145 Newfield Avenue in Hartford’s Behind the Rocks neighborhood.

---SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH---

2:30 p.m.--- Mayor Perez will join the huge crowd expected to watch the Grand Prix Hartford Champboat series.  This is the first time this high-speed boat race has come to New England.  The Connecticut River and Riverfront Recapture in Downtown Hartford will be center stage for this free family event.  Mayor Perez will also assist with the awards presentation.
