HARTFORD EXPECTING 20,000 VISITORS

 THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND

---NEWS RELEASE---

(October 4, 2007)--- First it was Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Hartford Civic Center.  Then it was the rollout of Hartford’s new marketing DVD.  But, these were just the warm-up acts for the big Columbus Day weekend here in the Capital City.  At least 20,000 more visitors are expected to enjoy major attractions and events and New England’s Rising Star will continue to roll out the red carpet.

Mayor Eddie A. Perez says, “Our residents and employees are great ambassadors and we’re ready to greet and guide folks to the diverse events happening in our neighborhoods.”

The world’s largest aviation association—the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is in town for its annual gathering--- held this year at the Connecticut Convention Center.  10,000 attendees could generate as much as $10 million in revenue for the local economy. Hartford was chosen because of regional assets like Brainard Airport and Bradley International Airport.  For more information about the AOPA 2007 schedule, visit www.aopa.org

The 6th Annual Hartford International Jazz Festival runs from October 5-7, featuring world-class performers and a multi-cultural program, including traditions from Brazil, Latin America, and the Middle East.  The festival opens on Friday, October 5th with a concert at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church with Grammy-nominated pianist and vocalist Elaine Elias.  Several thousand are expected to attend the shows as well as enjoy Hartford’s restaurants and clubs.  For a complete list of artists and venues go to www.hijf.com

The Second Annual Hartford Wolf Pack Family Block Party is Saturday, October 6th starting at 5:00 p.m.  This is a fan appreciation event to kickoff the Wolf Pack’s new season.  About 3,000 people are expected to turn out for all the fun in Downtown Hartford on Trumbull Street in front of the Civic Center.

Thousands are expected to line the streets of the South End for the annual Columbus Day Parade.  This traditional holiday fanfare will take place on Sunday, October 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., starting at the intersection of Maple and Franklin Avenues.  As many as 4,000 people are expected to attend, but if the weather stays warm, the crowd could be even larger!

Mayor Perez says, “Hartford is a great place for you and your family to enjoy.  The excitement is part of our positive momentum.”
