MAYOR PEREZ PLEASED “BID”

GETS ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORT

---NEWS RELEASE---

(October 24, 2006)--- The Business Improvement District has passed.  More than half of the individual landowners as well as landowners controlling the majority of taxable value in the district were need to approve the BID.  The final tally was well beyond that.    The final vote was175 yes to 17 no with 78.3% of the total assessment.

Mayor Eddie A. Perez says, “The BID is an important tool in keeping Hartford’s business momentum moving in a positive direction.  Once again it demonstrates that investors are committed to continuing this unprecedented Renaissance that the Capital City is experiencing.  Landowners and business leaders have a vital role in the growth of the City and this vote shows they’re saying ‘Yes’ to a more vibrant business district and economy.”

The Mayor, along with the Metro Hartford Alliance and Business for Downtown, had requested that the Hartford Court of Common Council approve the creation of a special services district for businesses in the Downtown, Asylum Hill, and a portion of Farmington Avenue.  Council passed the measure back on September 12th.  Businesses had until 5:00 p.m. today to submit their vote.

“The District” is designed to enhance the City’s substantial investment in public safety, cleanliness, and public improvements.  Landowners in this area would assess themselves an additional 1 mil in property taxes for the exclusive use within the district for enhanced security, cleanliness and marketing.
