BATTLE FOR FEDERAL FUNDS

 TOPIC OF REGIONAL CONFERENCE

---NEWS ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY 11/16---

9:00 a.m.--- Community Development Block Grants help Hartford’s star to rise!  Mayor Eddie A. Perez will welcome the hundreds of people attending the Northeast Regional Conference for the National Community Development Association.  The event takes place in Capital Rooms 1 and 2 at the Hartford Marriott Downtown, 200 Columbus Boulevard.  Mayor Perez will stress the importance of CDBG funds--- federal dollars that have helped provide:

1.      Homeownership information and education,

2.      Tutoring for students,

3.      Revitalization of Downtown including Capital Community College

4.      Development of shopping plazas, and

5.      Safety apparatus for Homeland Security.

Over the years, CDBG funding has been slashed nationwide.  In Hartford, the loss has meant more than $1.2 million in the past four years.  The fear is another 20-percent will be cut from the proposed FY 2007-08 Federal Budget. Mayor Perez will pledge to fight these cuts and encourage conference goers and organizations to join the effort to preserve these dollars that help improve the quality of life for Hartford residents.
