RESIDENTS URGED TO HAVE THEIR
 “BE READY KIT” AVAILABLE

---NEWS AND COMMUNITY RELEASE---

(December 1, 2006)--- The National Weather Service is predicting wet and windy weather for today and tomorrow for Hartford and other parts of the state.  Mayor Eddie A. Perez is asking residents to have their “Be Ready Kit” available just in case of downed power lines and loss of power.

“Just like when thunderstorms hit during the summer, wicked weather can come at anytime now that we are entering the winter season.  It is important for families to be prepared.  Luckily, we’re coming off one of the warmest Novembers on record, however, this storm is expected to bring colder temperatures, and we need to be ready for that change in case of an outage.”

In case of a power outage, the City’s Department of Emergency Services and Telecommunications, in cooperation with State Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the American Red Cross and Connecticut Light and Power recommend:

1.      Do not touch a downed power line:  Call 9-1-1

2.      Have a flashlight and extra batteries available--- do not use candles

3.      Avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer

4.      Have bottled water handy

5.      Stock up on non-perishable food items (that need no refrigeration or cooking) including baby food for infants

6.      First Aid Kit

7.      Non-prescription drugs (aspirin etc)

8.      Make sure prescriptions are not running low

9.      Sanitation supplies

10.  Extra clothing and blankets (and outdoor clothing)

11.  Entertainment (books, battery-operated games, etc)

Mayor Perez says, “It is important that we work together to keep our families prepared by putting safety first.”
