HARTFORD CRIME BY THE NUMBERS:

SERIOUS CRIME DOWN

---NEWS RELEASE---

(December 12, 2006)--- Hartford crime is going down and the Capital City has the numbers to prove it.  Mayor Eddie A. Perez and Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts presented a detailed crime summary that shows overall serious crime is down almost 6-percent from 2005, more than 17-percent since 2004, and down just over 8-percent since 2002.  Furthermore, a 25-year in-depth analysis shows fewer serious crimes are being committed today than in 1981.

Public Safety has improved greatly.  Personal safety has seen double-digit improvements with fewer murders, rapes, and robberies.  Property crimes are down even more with auto-theft and burglaries both more than 20-percent less than in the last five years.

Hartford, just like the rest of the nation, is challenged with the number of illegal guns on the streets and sadly in the hands of young people. Mayor Perez says, “I am working closely with Mayors in other cities across the country to come up with effective ways to put an end to this serious issue.  Hartford is not alone when it comes to the increased concern of gun violence--- one that must be addressed immediately at all levels of government.”

Mayor Perez goes on to say, “As for the role of the brave men and women who serve the residents of Hartford, they have recovered substantially more of these illegal guns so far this year, than all of last year.  This is a credit to their dedication to serve and protect the residents in all of our neighborhoods.”

A news conference was held to outline in detail all the progress that is being made thanks to Hartford’s Neighborhood Policing Plan.  For the complete list of facts, please log on to www.hartford.gov or Hartford residents are invited to watch repeats of the news conference in its entirety on Hartford Government Cable Access Channel 21.
