---MEDIA AND COMMUNITY RELEASE---
(December 26, 2006)--- Mayor Eddie A. Perez wishes the residents and employees of the City of Hartford a Happy Kwanzaa. This is the African-American and Pan-African holiday that is recognized by millions of people around the world, including here in the Capital City. A local Kwanzaa celebration will be held tonight, December 26th, at 5 p.m. at the Charter Oak Cultural Center, 21 Charter Oak Avenue.
Mayor Perez says, “Kwanzaa is the celebration of family, community, and culture. The theme this year is ‘The Principles and Practice of Bringing Good into the World.’ Let us all work together to bring joy and peace into our city, region and state by taking pride in our children, our homes, and our neighborhoods.”
There are seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Mayor Perez believes that these are principles that can be taken to heart by all of us each and every day--- even beyond this holiday.
