In
order to provide the City of Hartford with a modern, state-of-the-art
parking facility, the Morgan Street Garage was completed on December
1st, 2001. Costing nearly $26 million, this garage covers two city blocks
and comprises of 2,290 parking spaces and houses the Administrative
Offices of the Hartford Parking Authority.
In 1998, the Connecticut General Assembly created the Capital
City Economic Development Authority, better known as CCEDA.
This quasi-public authority was responsible for overseeing the six projects,
which are known as the "six pillars" of Hartford's economic redevelopment
– one of which is the Morgan Street Garage. In May of 2000, the
Hartford Parking Authority and the State of Connecticut entered into
a purchase/sale agreement whereby the State purchased 500 parking spaces
in the garage for $6.5 million that is used for Capital Community College.
United Healthcare Services is also a major tenant of the garage with
a non-exclusive right to 650 spaces.
