Citizen Tip Leads to Arson Arrest

On January 7, 2015 members of the Hartford Police Department South Conditions Unit and South End Community Service Officers responded to the area of 48/50 Bond Street in response to a citizen tip of an active arson in progress. The citizen caller reported observing an individual lighting a 1998 Chevrolet G10 van, color white, on fire while it was parked in the driveway of the residence. The tipster reported the suspect was then standing across the street from the address and appeared to be watching the fire catch. As police units arrived on scene, the caller reported that the suspect had fled into the rear of 49 Bond Street. The citizen caller provided a solid description of the suspect. Officers entered the rear parking lot 49 Bond St. and observed a party fitting the suspect description. The suspect, upon observing the officers approach, assaulted a Community Service Officer and fled on foot. South Conditions Unit Officers pursued the accused on foot, out running the suspect, resulting in his subsequent apprehension. The accused was identified as Hector Lleras, 22 of Hartford. Lleras was found to be in the possession of a pair of partially burnt gloves, and a lighter.

The Hartford Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the vehicle fire. It was determined that the accused had soaked a cloth in gasoline, inserted the item into the outer fuel filler neck of the vehicle, then lit the cloth on fire. The fire was extinguished just prior to the flame reaching the inner gas tank of the vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the private driveway of the location and in close proximity, inches from the house (an occupied residence). It was later determined that the accused had no prior relationship to the vehicle owner and/or occupants of the residence.

The Major Crimes Division Arson Detectives will thoroughly follow up on this investigation.

Arrested: Hector Lleras, 22 of Hartford
Charges: Arson 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Assault on Police, Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, and Interfering with Police.
