How to get a copy of a Hartford Police Report

Hartford Police Officers submit about 65 to 70 thousand reports a year.  The Records Division manages those case files in addition to many other types of files.

Generally, police reports are submitted by Officers at the end of their shift of duty.  Occasionally a report cannot be completed immediately due to some exigent circumstance or emergency that may occur in police work.  Reports then need to be reviewed and processed through our Crime Analysis Unit before they can be released to the public.  Certain case reports also need additional supervisory review.

Rule of thumb if you want a copy of a report:  Wait 72 hours whenever possible, or call to check on the status before coming down.  The fee for getting a report is 50 cents a page.

Some reports may not be available to you, or they may contain information that has been blacked out.  This is because Connecticut State Law requires that certain items are not available until after the case is completed to protect those involved.  Often this is when the case has gone to trial and a judge has ruled that the report can be released.

The Records Division employees will require some identification and information from you in order to find your report.  A case number that the Officer may have given you is the quickest way to locate a case.  Other information to help find a case are names of those involved, or the date and location of the incident.

If you are requesting a report by mail, a self-addressed stamped envelope is required.  You also must send a copy of your identification and a check or money order made payable to the City of Hartford for 50 cents per page of the report.  Please call first to ensure the report will be available and to find out how many pages the report consists of.  You can click here to get a form which may be printed out to request a copy of a report
