Police Department Property Room
What is the Property Room?
The
Hartford Police Departments Property Division is instrumental in
supporting investigations, assisting in successful prosecution at
criminal trials, and facilitating the timely return of property to
its rightful owner. The Property Room staff is solely responsible
for the safekeeping of all property submitted as evidence ensuring
an uninterrupted chain of custody. All incoming property is
documented and tracked via a state of the art barcode system.
Mission Statement:
The
primary function of the Hartford Police Departments Property Room
Unit is to receive and safely store evidence, property for
safekeeping, and found property; and to timely return property to
its rightful owner or legally dispose of the property.
Public Notice:
In
accordance with City of Hartford Municipal Code Section 29-16, the
Hartford Police Department is in possession of unclaimed found
property for which the owner cannot be located.
If you
believe some of this property is yours, phone the Hartford Police
Property Room at 860-527-7300 extension 5277 or 5279, weekdays
8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Be prepared to provide a detailed
description of the property, the circumstances of its loss and
proof of ownership as necessary.
Positive
identification is required before property will be released.
If not
claimed, items may be sold at public auction, destroyed, donated
or released to a finder.

Property Room Division FAQ:
A Sergeant currently
commands the Hartford Police Department Property Room. The
commanders primary role is to ensure all state statues, municipal
codes, and policy and procedures are adhered to and to supervise
the Property Room staff. A Detective, two sworn Police Officers,
and two civilian technicians currently staff the Property Room.
The Property Room staff receives, documents, processes and tracks
tens of thousands of pieces of evidence yearly. In addition the
Hartford Police Departments Asset Forfeiture Bureau reports to the
commander of the Property Room. The Asset Forfeiture Bureau is
tasked with seizing money and property used in narcotics related
crimes.
