HARTFORD POLICE MAKE 17 ARRESTS IN UNDERCOVER DETAIL TARGETING STREET LEVEL PROSTITUTION AND PERSONS PATRONIZING PROSTITUTES.

(Hartford) - On Wednesday, August 18, 2004, beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m., and in response to numerous citizen complaints regarding prostitution activity in the Ashley and Huntington Streets area, Detectives of the Hartford Police Department's Vice and Narcotics Division, along with North Community Response Division Officers, conducted an undercover detail targeting street level prostitutes and persons patronizing prostitutes.

The operation began by arresting all persons involved in prostitution at the location, followed by undercover detectives posing as prostitutes.  As a result of the undercover detail, eight (8) females were arrested and charged with prostitution, two (2) males were arrested and charged with promoting prostitution, and seven (7) males were arrested and charged with patronizing a prostitute, one person of the seven was also charged with interfering with police.

In commenting on the operation, HPD Vice and Narcotics Division Vice Supervisor, Sergeant Franco Sanzo stated, "the Hartford Police Department will continue to address quality of life issues that negatively impact our neighborhoods, such as street level prostitution.  Individuals involved in such illegal activity should be aware, particularly as the new school year approaches, that we will continue to be diligent in our enforcement activity.  This is not the type of activity our school children should have to worry about as they walk to and  from school."
