ATTEMPTED BURGLARY AT AREA CHURCH FOILED BY HARTFORD POLICE.

(Hartford) - At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2005, Lieutenant Patrick Jobes and Officer Anthony Martinez responded to a burglary alarm at the First Presbyterian Church, 136 Capitol Avenue, Hartford.  Upon arrival they found the south-east window of the Church kicked in.  Under further investigation they observed an individual exiting the Church with three garbage bags believed to contain stolen items from the Church.  The suspect immediately ran south across a parking lot heading east on Buckingham Street while being pursued on foot by Lieutenant Jobes.  The foot chase continued east onto Main Street where Lieutenant Jobes caught up with the suspect who immediately began to resist arrest.  After a short, yet intense struggle, the suspect was taken into custody and Church items recovered.

The suspect, Harold Gowder, DOB 1/16/68, of No Certain Address (NCA), was transported to Hartford Hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained while attempting to resist arrest.  Gowder was charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, Larceny in the Fifth Degree, and Assault on Police.
