HARTFORD POLICE SERVE THREE ARREST WARRANTS ON KYWAN GUNN; BAIL EXCEEDS $1 MILLION.

(Hartford) - Police Chief Patrick J. Harnett and Juvenile Investigative Services Commander Lieutenant Daryl K. Roberts announced today that Hartford Police have served multiple arrest warrants on Kywan Gunn, DOB 3/26/79 of 247 Flatbush Avenue, Hartford, charging him with numerous crimes, including Kidnapping, Sexual Assault, Robbery and Risk of Injury to a Minor.

Gunn's arrest is the culmination of a joint investigation by the HPD's Juvenile Investigative (JID) and Major Crimes Divisions which began in August, 2004 and encompassed three separate cases tied together by detectives.

On August 5, 2004, victim Jane Doe #, 1, a minor, reported to police that while walking to school in the Sherbrooke Avenue and Broadview Terrace area, a black male, in his early twenties, heavy set, wearing a white "do rag" and a gray sweat suit approached her with a knife, grabbing her.  She screamed and was able to run away.  She reported to police she would be able to identify the suspect if she saw him again.

On August 19, 2004, victim Jane Doe #2 was walking in the area of Sherbrooke Avenue and Broadview Terrace when she was approached by a black male suspect who grabbed her and dragged her across the street.  The suspect told her to not scream or he would "stab" her.  Jane Doe #2 was able to escape the suspect without serious injury.  On August 28, 2004, Jane Doe #2 informed HPD detectives that she had just seen the person who assaulted her on August 19.  She reported that while at a bus stop at the corner of New Britain Avenue and Hillside Avenue she noticed this man who looked very familiar.  The suspect walked to a nearby parked car and drove away.

Jane Doe #2 used her telephone to photograph the vehicle before it left the area.  She reported to police she recognized the individual driving a red vehicle as the man who assaulted her on August 19th.  The vehicle which appeared in Jane Doe #2's photo was that of a small to mid size, two door, newer model red vehicle.  Doe e-mailed the photo to detectives.

On September 9, 2004, victim Jane Doe #3 reported to Hartford Police she was sexually assaulted in Highland Park while walking home from school.  Jane Doe #3 described her assailant as a heavy set black male in his early twenties, wearing a white "ENCYE" shirt and blue jeans.  She tried to run but was caught by the suspect who put her in a "head-lock" whereupon he dragged her to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her.

Detectives of the HPD's JID and Major Crimes Divisions connected details of the incidents based on similarities of victim and witness accounts, developed a composite description of the suspect and his vehicle, and a photo array which was utilized by the victims to identify the suspect, leading to the issuance of three arrest warrants for Gunn.  Subsequent to Gunn's arrest by Hartford Police on Monday evening, September 20, 2004,  a search and seizure warrant was executed at 247 Flatbush Avenue, Gunn's last known address.  As a result of the search warrant, detectives seized a stolen .22 caliber handgun and a small amount of heroin.

A convicted felon, Gunn remains in police custody on a bond in excess of $1 million dollars and is scheduled for arraignment in Hartford Superior Court today.  He is charged with Sexual Assault in the First Degree, Sexual Assault in the Third Degree,  Assault in the Third Degree, Kidnapping in the First Degree (2 counts), Criminal Attempt to Kidnap in the First Degree, two counts of Risk of Injury to Minor, Threatening, and Robbery in the First Degree.

In commenting on Gunn's arrest, Juvenile Investigative Division Commander, Lieutenant Daryl K. Roberts said, "This is one more example of how  community and police partnerships benefit public safety.  The arrest of Gunn, with the help of information received about the suspect from members of the community and through the coordinated efforts by detectives of the HPD's Juvenile Investigative and Major Crimes Divisions, have no doubt made our streets safer."

Hartford Police Chief Patrick J. Harnett commended both the community and HPD detectives in the apprehension of Gunn, stating "I commend the detectives of the JID and Major Crimes Divisions for their diligence in this investigation.  By the similarities in these cases, based on information provided by the victims, and acting with a sense of urgency,  HPD detectives quickly identified and removed a dangerous sex offender from our community."

Hartford Police are continuing the investigation of Gunn as a suspect in similar cases.  Anyone with information which could be of assistance in the investigation is asked to contact Sergeant Steven DiBella of the HPD's Juvenile Investigative Division at 527-6300, extension 5254.  All information will be kept confidential.
