HARTFORD POLICE MAKE ARREST IN EARLY MORNING SHOOTING.

(Hartford) - As a result of information provided by an anonymous citizen and a quick response by Hartford Police Patrol and Major Crimes Detectives, Hartford Police have in custody a suspect wanted in connection with an early morning shooting on Wednesday, September 15, 2004, in the area of Main and Seyms Streets.

At approximately 3 A.M. a Hartford Police Patrol unit was flagged down at Main and Seyms Streets by a male victim stating he had been shot in the leg while sitting in his vehicle with a friend in the area of Main and Seyms Street.  A description of the suspect and weapon were obtained and broadcasted to area units. The victim, Charles Carter of 71 Warrington Avenue, Hartford, was transported to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening single gunshot wound to his upper right leg.

While HPD officers and detectives were investigating the incident, an anonymous call from a concerned citizen was received by Hartford Police providing information as to the location of the suspect.  Based on this information, officers responded to 485 Albany Avenue and located the suspect,  Miguel Rivera DOB 9/11/85, of 34 Willard Street, Hartford.  Rivera was found in possession of a .22 caliber, four shot derringer type firearm with ammunition, which was seized at the time of his arrest.  Rivera was transported to HPD headquarters where he provided a written statement to Major Crimes detectives confessing to the shooting.  Rivera remains in police custody pending booking and arraignment in Hartford Superior Court.

In commenting on the incident, Hartford Police Chief Patrick J. Harnett said, "This is where collaboration and partnership with the community pays off.  As a result of the immediate action of this citizen in providing valuable information on the whereabouts of this suspect, one more dangerous criminal and a loaded handgun are off our streets, making our city safer."
