Hartford Police Burglary investigation leads to arrest.

(Hartford) - Hartford Chief of Police Patrick J. Harnett today announced Hartford Police had made an arrest as a result of an investigation into a report of an active burglary in the Van Block Avenue area of the city.

On Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Hartford Police Patrol officers responded to a report of an active burglary at the LaFamilia grocery store located at 84 Van Block Avenue.  Upon arrival, Patrol Officers Rebecca O'Shea and Michael Edelwich met with the business owner who indicated that the suspect was still on the property, and subsequently launched an immediate search of the building for the suspect.  Officers O'Shea and Edelwich located the suspect, Jesus Torres, hiding in a closet in a vacant third floor apartment above the grocery store.  The HPD's Evidentiary Services Division processed the crime scene for evidence.  Visible damage was found where the suspect attempted to gain entry.

Arrested and charged with Burglary in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (2 counts), and Possession of Burglary Tools was Jesus Torres, DOB 9/36/66.  Torres' bond was set at $150,000.

In commenting on the arrest, Hartford Police Chief Patrick J. Harnett stated, "I commend both the responding officers, O'Shea and Edelwich, and in this particular instance, the owner of LaFamilia grocery store, for their quick response which resulted in the apprehension of a suspect in this case.  It is this type of community and police partnership that improves the quality of life in our neighborhoods."
