Sergeant Arace joined the Hartford Police Department on August 15, 1996, and after graduation from the Hartford Police Academy on January 24, 1997, was assigned to the Patrol Division. Sergeant Arace was a certified Field Training Officer for newly graduated probationary police officers. On May 11, 2003, Sergeant Arace was appointed Community Service Officer for the Barry Square neighborhood in the south end of Hartford. During his law enforcement career Sergeant Arace received an official commendation from the U.S. Marshals Service of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Hartford Police Department's Distinguished Service Medal, and numerous letters of commendations for his work above and beyond the call of duty throughout his career. Sergeant Arace's funeral service will be Thursday, October 26, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 53 Capitol Avenue, Hartford. Relatives, friends, and colleagues may call at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, from 3-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sergeant Matthew Arace's name may be made to the Hartford Police Benevolent Association, c/o the Hartford Police Department, 50 Jennings Road, Hartford, CT 06120.
