HPD Mounted Patrol Unit to Debut at National Night Out Events.

(Hartford) -
The Hartford Police Mounted Patrol Unit will debut two of their new horses at two National Night Out events this evening.  The horses, five year old Zeus and ten year old Maximus, have been in training with the First Company Governor's Horse Guard on their equestrian skills since June and have one more month of training to complete before they are assigned to duty.

Zeus and Maximus, and the members of the HPD's Mounted Patrol Unit, will be at Lozada Park, located at Center and Seyms Streets, at 5:00 pm. and at Pope Park at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Under the supervision of Sergeant Heriberto Resto, HPD personnel assigned to the Mounted Patrol Unit include HPD 13 year veteran Officer Marcel Washington, 12 year veteran Officer Deborah Scates, five year veteran Officer Todd Jediny, five year veteran Officer Gena Liappes, and four year veteran Hiram Otero.

In commenting on the return of the Hartford Police Mounted Patrol Unit, Hartford Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts said, "I know everyone is anxious and thrilled to have our Mounted Patrol Unit back, so we thought it would be fitting with the intent of 'National Night Out' to give our horses a 'night out' from training to visit their new constituents in the city whom they will soon be serving."

The public and media are welcome to visit the horses this evening in Lozada Park at 5:00 p.m. and Pope Park at 7:00 p.m.

The Hartford Police Mounted Patrol Unit was disbanded in 1990 due to staffing and budgetary issues.  Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez and the Hartford Court of Common Council approved funding in the current year city budget to bring the beloved Unit back to patrol Hartford streets, parks and neighborhoods.  "It's a tremendous high visibility community policing tool that I am sure will be of great benefit to our city.  I am sure everyone looks forward to meeting the horses tonight," said Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez.
