BLOOMFIELD MAN CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER

(Hartford) -  Detectives of the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division have charged Rene Fernandez, DOB 4/20/73, of 780 Cottage Grove Road, Bloomfield, with manslaughter in the first degree with a firearm in connection with a shooting that occurred at the Boriqua Market, 160 South Marshall Street, Hartford.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a party shot.  On arrival officers located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.  EMS personnel arrived and transported both victims to Saint Francis Hospital for treatment.  One victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 3:57 p.m.  The second victim was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Preliminary investigation by HPD detectives has determined the individuals involved in this incident were known to each other and part of an ongoing domestic dispute.  The identity of the victims are being withheld by police at this time pending positive identification, notification of next of kin and further investigation. Pending the final outcome of the investigation additional charges could be forthcoming. 

Fernandez, described as an Hispanic male, 5/11", 180 lbs, and green eyes, remains in custody on $250,000 pending arraignment in Hartford Superior Court.
