The Hartford Police Bomb Squad is comprised of seven members from
the Hartford Police Department, one from the East Hartford Police Department,
and two from the West Hartford Police Department. The bomb squad covers the
Capital Region area. They are one of four accredited bomb squads in the State of
Connecticut.
Members of the bomb squad are certified bomb technicians
through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Army. The members go through monthly training which
includes Hazardous Materials training along with other bomb detection and
disposal techniques. Eight of the ten members of the squad have been trained as
Hazardous Materials Technicians. They are also trained in investigating
suspicious packages, military ordinances, improvised explosive devises, and
packages which may contain a chemical or biological agent. (Weapons of Mass
Destruction).
The bomb squad has a fully operational robot with x-ray
capabilities, three response trucks to
carry personnel and equipment, and a bomb well; which transports "improvised
devises" to the disposal range.
The bomb squad also has two bomb detection dogs; Venice and
Akira. The dogs are Yellow Labs which were purchased by the Hartford Bomb Squad
from Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The dogs are trained to detect high and low explosives. The dogs will sit when they detect
something.
On average, the bomb squad is summoned around the region five to
six times a month.
