The Hartford Police Activities League (PAL) is a non-profit unit with the Hartford Police Department which is committed to improving the lives of inner city youth through recreational activities and educational programs that offer an alternative to violence, gang membership, truancy and substance abuse. PAL promotes the positive relationships between the inner city youth and the members of the Hartford Police Department by providing positive alternatives to life’s choices and mentoring. Our programs incorporate well-versed officers that are knowledgeable and committed to being positive role models and other reputable volunteers. The PAL program teaches its youth the importance of integrity, respect, discipline, self-esteem, leadership, teamwork and other valuable life skills that breed success.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

All programs are free to the youth we serve and include a snack and meal which varies according to program length. Programs run Monday through Thursday with Homework Hour from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. and nightly activities run from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Our goal is equip our youth with the skills they need to function in our society as contributing citizen. PAL also offers its youth exposure to the many resources available to them. Our programs consist of many different facets, which include:

• On-site Mentoring – PAL provides youth to PAL mentor officers, volunteer officers, outside facilitators and speakers as well as exposure to the Hartford Police Explorers which are integrated into PAL Programming.
  
  
• Regular Recreational Programming –PAL programs rotate during the year through dance, exercise dills, football, flag football, double-dutch, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, baseball, gaming tournaments, volleyball, dodge ball, martial arts, kickboxing and more. PAL also hosts movie Night once a month on a Fridays.
  
  
• Educational and Art Programs – PAL programs are integrated into regular program and provide workshops on Real Talk, Fashion, budgeting, etiquette, bullying, body image, stencilling, gangs, sexting, gun violence, Equine workshop, conflict resolution, nutrition, safety, tobacco and our Youth Empowerment to Success Program.
  
  
• Offsite Programming – the PAL Boxing program runs out of 1055 Broad Street in Hartford, Monday through Friday from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. For purposes of recreation and also for professional boxing matches through USAA Boxing. 2012 Hartford Wildcats is a PAL sponsored team that recruits year-round from our in-house programs. During the football season their practices are held at Colt Park in Hartford.
  
  
• Field Trips – PAL uses field trips as rewards and incentives. Field trips roller skating, bowling, movies, Riverfront, Lake Compounce, Rockcats and Yankee Stadium, Ski Sundown, Hartford Hawks and UCONN basketball, Disney on Ice, CT Whale, Ringling Brothers Circus, Beardsley Zoo, Ice Skating, Pilot Pen, Nutcracker and the Wadsworth.
  
  
• Life Skills Camps – PAL camps are held on single days, vacations and during the Summer when Hartford Schools are closed. PAL also retreats for a week in August of every year at Camp Cedar in Maine.
  
  
• Special Events – Hartford PAL has hosted many different functions such as Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, Christmas Giveaway and Party, Miracle Family Christmas, Youth Challenge, Bikes 4 Kids, Hartford’s Dance Off, PAL Talent Show, Global Community Service Days and many police fundraisers. Our officers also attend numerous Community events for recruiting purposes and also create community service opportunities for our youth to participate in.

HOW TO APPLY:

Each Youth applicant must complete and return an application and youth rules form before attending any of our programs. Applications are accepted via email and in-person at the PAL facility. Any agency and/or school requesting PAL participation must complete and return a request. Requests are accepted via email and in-person at the PAL facility.
