Excellent arrest by Community Service Officers

On October 20th, 2014, at 3:41pm, a Hartford Police Department North Community Service Officer observed a GMC Terrain operating at a high rate of speed south on Garden Street from Westland Street. The officer began to follow the vehicle as it turned west on Nelson Street. At that point the vehicle stopped and the front passenger, McKeithan, exited the vehicle with a laptop bag. McKeithan dropped the bag then quickly entered back into the vehicle. The officer exited his vehicle and retrieved the bag as the vehicle sped off west on Nelson Street towards Enfield Street. The officer quickly broadcasted the vehicle's description and direction of travel. Another North Community Service Officer, who was in the area, was able to stop the vehicle near Nelson Street at Enfield Street. Patrol officers responded quickly as back up and assisted as both parties were taken into custody without further incident. Within the laptop bag retrieved by the officer was the below listed Tec 9 firearm.

Suspect Vehicle; 2014 GMC Terrain color Gray, Kansas Registration 976GAU (rental).

Seized Firearm; Intratec Model AB-10 (TEC-9) 9mm semi-automatic Assault Weapon w/ 30 round
magazine containing 18 live rounds, Firearm listed in NCIC as stolen out of, Hartford CT, on 5/21/2003
36 rounds of loose 9mm ammunition.
Less than 4 ounces of Marijuana.
$481.00 in U.S. Currency

Firearms Arrest/Recovery October 16, 2014

On October 16, 2014 at 6:30pm members of the Hartford Police Department South Conditions Unit (SCU) responded to the area of 25 Lincoln Street in response to a citizen complaint of shots fired. SCU Investigators were able to locate a witness whom provided a suspect description and direction of travel. The listed arrested party, whom fit the provided suspect description, was then located and detained in the rear of 10 Lincoln Street by SCU investigators and members of the Shooting Task Force (STF) arrived on scene to assist in the investigation. A subsequent on scene investigation led to the recovery of the listed stolen firearm, and the positive identification of the arrested party. An extensive area canvass was conducted in search of evidence, and/or possible victims, yielding negative results. The arrested party, during a post Miranda interview, provided a sworn written confession in regards to the incident.

Arrested: Verhjanish Castaneda-Morales, 21 of Hartford, CT

2. Possession Stolen Firearm
3. Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm
4. Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree
5. Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree

Recovered Stolen Firearm: (1) Ruger 9mm semi-auto, Model LC, Handgun (s/n 32013002), and (2) magazines containing (8) live 9mm rounds (picture below)

Kevin Bell Memorial Fund

The Hartford Fire Department and the Hartford Fire Fighter Association, IAFF 760, would like to thank everyone that has supported us through these difficult times.  We are still working to ensure that the Bell and Martinez families receive the support that they are deserving of.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The Hartford Fire Department and the Hartford Fire Fighter Association, IAFF 760, are selling Kevin L. Bell Memorial Tee Shirts to raise funds for the Bell family.  The Tee Shirts are available for purchase thru the Hartford Fire Department Special Services Unit at the Hartford Public Safety Complex, 253 High Street, Hartford, CT between the hours of 8am to 4pm.  The shirts are also available at the Offices of the Hartford Fire Fighters Association, IAFF 760 at 1 Linden Place, Unit 104, Hartford, CT between the hours of 9am and 2 pm.  All proceeds from these sales will go to the Kevin L.
