On Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 11:14 pm, Hartford Police Department Patrol Officers responded to 616 Maple Avenue for the report of shots fired, by the activation of Shot Spotter and the 911 report of a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old male victim, identified as Alexis Marrero, inside the Ciales Grocery store, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to both the torso and hand. EMS responded and transported the Marrero to Hartford Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 1:55 am. The Hartford Police Major Crimes Division responded to the scene and assumed investigation.
Several investigative leads were developed leading to the preparation of an arrest warrant for the accused shooter identified as Jonathan M. Contrera, 22, of Hartford, CT. On June 16, 2015, the arrest warrant was granted at GA14 with a judge set bond of $1,000,000.
On July 27, 2015, through investigation HPD/US Marshals Fugitive Task Force and HPD Shooting Task Force were able to determine the location of Contrera. The information lead HPD Detectives to several hotels in the area of Southington, where a canvas was conducted and a vehicle associated with Contrera was observed. Surveillance was established on a specific room at the Southington Motel 6. HPD Detectives apprehended Contrera at the door of the room without further incident. Contrera was transported to the Major Crimes Division for debriefing and will be processed at the Hartford Police booking facility, charging him with Murder and carrying a Pistol without a permit.

On Sunday, July 26, 2015, at approximately 2:04pm, Hartford Police Department Patrol Officers responded to 6 Kenyon Court on a report of an assault with a firearm. Upon arrival, Patrol Officers located an unresponsive victim seated in a vehicle and suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. EMS responded and transported the victim to Saint Francis Hospital where the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:42pm. Hartford Police Department Major Crimes Detectives responded to the scene and are continuing the investigation. Evidence at the scene indicates that this incident stemmed from a transaction/robbery involving a significant amount of narcotics.

On July 25, 2015, Patrol Officers from the Hartford Police Department received information that an individual in a tan, older model Lexus had been involved in street robberies throughout the City of Hartford. A description of both the vehicle and the suspect were given, shortly thereafter members of the HPD Shooting Task Force observed a vehicle and individual matching the description provided driving north on Wethersfield Avenue. A motor vehicle stop was conducted and the operator was identified as Kuwan Russ, 36, of Hartford. During the stop a Glock 9mm pistol (stolen) with ten rounds was located on Kuwan Russ. Portable police lights, pepper spray, flashlights, a monocular as well as several masks and disguises were located inside the vehicle. Russ, a Convicted Felon with a prior robbery and firearm history was arrested and transported to the Hartford Police Booking facility for processing.
