(January 30, 2014) Mayor Pedro E. Segarra has announced today that he supports Richard Wareing to serve as Chairman of the Board of Education. Wareing has served on the board since February 2012.
In addition, the Mayor announced that he is appointing Dr. Shelley Best to serve as a member on the board.
"Rich has been a passionate member of the Board of Education and I'm excited that he has accepted this opportunity to serve as its chairman," said Mayor Segarra. "His passion for the City and his commitment to strong parental engagement will help strengthen the Board's focus on providing Hartford students with the high quality education they deserve."
Wareing is an attorney with the firm Natalie & Wolinetz and has practiced in Hartford since 1994. He has been active on numerous boards and commissions including two charter revision commissions and the Hartford Redevelopment Agency. Wareing was also appointed to the Metropolitan District Commission at the age of 28 where he served for 9 years.
Wareing is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and the College of the Holy Cross.
"Public education has always been a priority for me. It has been a privilege to work alongside my colleagues on the Board of Education" Wareing said. "It's an honor to be asked by Mayor Segarra to lead our efforts."
Dr. Best has been President and CEO of The Conference of Churches since 2001. During her tenure she has led her organization in the acquisition and redevelopment of the former Hartford Courant Arts Center to "The 224," a 30,000 square foot, health and wellness, leadership development conference center located at 224 Farmington Avenue in Hartford.
She is recognized as a thought leader in the areas of health equity, cultural competence and faith-based community development.
Dr. Best is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Yale University and Hartford Seminary.
"I am truly honored to be appointed and look forward to working with the Board of Education to ensure Hartford's young people receive a world class education that prepares them for success in their future," Best said.
Dr. Best's and Mr. Wareing's appointments are subject to confirmation by the City Council and the Board of Education respectively.
